Barnyard Buddies Birthday

This entire cake is edible. It is based on a double tiered 10-inch cake

and the barn is all cake also. It is covered in fondant with all fondant details.

It was such a fun cake to make. I loved molding all of the animals and using all of the bright colors. The birthday party was set up so cute too. There were bales of hay everywhere and a barnyard scene set up for partygoers to take their picture in front of. The birthday boy was being strolled around in a little red wagon... too cute!

Long Time, No Update :(

Hi Everyone!

The time has finally come to update my site. I am embarrassed to say that before today, the last time I had updated Carat Cakes was back in April. There has been so much going on lately (read on to find out what!!!)

I really appreciate all of the kind words I receive from all of you who check out my site. Please keep coming back- I promise I won't wait that long to update my site again!

I do still have some other cakes/cupcakes that are not on the site, but wanted to put the majority of them in. If you don't see your cake on the site and want it to be featured, please email an electronic version of the picture.

Also, please remember when you get to the bottom of a page, you can click on "older posts" to get to more cakes!!!

Lastly, on the last 5-10 posts I only put up pictures - no descriptions. I will be going back to update each posting to include a description, but thought it was most important to get the pics up.

It FINALLY Happened- We're Engaged!!!

Like I mentioned, there has been so much going on this summer- including our engagement!!! It's been two months and I'm still super excited and am in full planning mode (even though Dana demands I 'take it easy' since we're not getting married until June 2012)!

In case you're wondering, the answer is YES- at the moment, I do plan on making our wedding cake! My mother's reaction "good, I have until 2012 to talk you out of it!"... ha, ha, ha. I know I can do it- I have the help of so many great friends and family members that I couldn't imaging ordering my cake from someone else... famous last words (stay tuned!)...

Here are a few pictures from our special day and a shot or two of our engagement session. (I will be getting the disc with the pictures soon, I took these off of Jenn's site on Facebook which is why they are smaller than usual- I will update as soon as I get it!)

Italy!!!

After almost 2 years of planning, our trip to Italy finally arrived. We left in late June and came back in early July. It was such an amazing experience and was so happy that my parents, sister and boyfriend (now finally fiancee) were with me. I literally took 1500 photos- later narrowing them down to 1,200! Everywhere you looked was another photo opportunity- it was so beautiful! Here are a few pictures of my trip- some breathtaking, some that display what I had always pictured Italy to be!

Please: for any of you even thinking of traveling to Italy- check out Proximo Travel out of Worcester. Dr. Anthony Nachef is the most amazing guide you could ever ask for. After taking a trip with him I know I will have a hard time ever planning another without him. I really can not say enough great things about him and his company. If you want more details- google him or email me- I'd be happy to share more praises!

House Party!

This cake was a massive undertaking. A client of mine came to me to ask for a replica of the birthday guy's summer home at the Cape. The guest of honor is an architect and really takes a lot of pride in this home that he designed and restored on his own. Because of his career, I wanted to make him proud and my client was super great about providing me with pictures (40 to be exact) of every angle of the home. It really helped me piece together what a beautiful house this was and there were many symbolic details that I made sure to keep.

The pictures don't do the cake justice in showing the size and detail. I had to immediately put it in the caterer's walk in fridge due to a 3 hour commute in super hot weather. The pictures are foggy because of the humidity meeting the coldness of the walk in fridge.

Living the Sweet Life

This post goes out to you, Dianne- Happy "30th" Birthday!!!

Dianne celebrated a big birthday milestone this year and I was so excited to make her cake. Her kitchen is light pink, brown and cupcake themed so I wanted a cake that would go along with that adorable theme! The catch was that I wanted her to help me because we've both been dying to do a themed cake like this, but her party was a surprise. I had to pass it off as a last minute cake order for a school bake sale.

Everything was a success and we had fun making it!

For those of you who don't know, Dianne is my future-mother-in-law and may partner in crime/cake. She is so crafty and is always on hand to help me out. She's graduated from a frosting "Colorist" to a fondant "Detailer". She also comes on almost all of my wedding cake deliveries and many other set ups. I honestly don't know what I would do without her, her assistance, her expanding cake decorating skills, her oven and freezer and her mild

manners at times when mine are not so mild :)

Here is her cake. It said "Live the Sweet Life" in Italian around the top tier:

Eat Me (Seriously, It's Cake)

This is seriously, one of the most fun cakes I've worked on. I love the whimsical/topsy-turvey nature of the Alice In Wonderland inspired theme. It was made for my company's Administrative Professionals' Appreciation Day. The theme was, as you guessed it- an Alice in Wonderland Tea Party. They even had a tea expert come in to give them some great lessons.

The group that ordered this was really great and open to my ideas. They gave me the theme and I ran with it.

A Seaside Soiree

Congratulations, Stephanie & Dave!

Stephanie and Dave came to me through a referral from their neighbor- and a very loyal client of mine. First Stephanie came over one evening to discuss her ideas and I instantly knew I was going to love working with her. She has an infectious energy and is hysterical! She was really open to any ideas and we searched through some beach themed cakes since they were getting married right on the water at the Cape. She loved the idea of cupcakes so we included those.

Next was our second meeting when I got to meet Dave. He is just as funny as Stephanie and I can see how great of a couple they truly are. We talked about size of the cake, number and flavor of cupcakes, etc.

In the end, we went with a smaller two tiered cake to still get the 'wedding cake' feel and enough cupcakes (17 dozen) for everyone at the wedding to have one. There were 8 different flavor cupcakes (Chocolate, Gold, Gold with Key Lime filling, Chocolate with Raspberry filling, Espresso with mascarpone cheese filling, Lemon and Red Velvet with cream cheese buttercream.) An aunt of Stephanie's hand made their wedding cake topper.

Last post for this wedding- there were so many pictures, I couldn't make just one (two or three for that matter) blog entries so I went with four :)

The bride printed out quotes on love and framed them to put on tables around the reception site. This also shows the individual shell cupcake holders I used:

This is just one of two of the large totes we hauled the cupcakes in. I thought it was a pretty amazing accomplishment- we didn't loose one in the two hours it took us to get to the site! Dianne came up with a great idea of using plastic under-bed storage containers- brilliant!

Life's a Beach!

This cake was made and delivered to Westerly, Rhode Island for my wonderful cousin and her husband. She wanted a beach themed cake and loved the idea of using Adirondack chairs as a cake topper- super cute!

We also supplemented the serving size of the cake with cupcakes (some plain, some decorated with white chocolate shells colored coral to match the color scheme). This concept has become very popular for a few reasons some of which include: it adds a different element to the traditional stand alone cake, it generally is less expensive, and it's much easier to serve!

Cherry Blossom Wedding Cake

This funky cherry blossom cake was created for my co-workers outdoor wedding reception in Rhode Island. She loved the deep purple color with the white contrast. For added effect I sprayed the entire cake in an edible, opal sheen to make it 'pop'. The flowers were hand made and this cake certainly put a spin on the traditional pink and brown cherry blossom cake!

Elegant Simplicity

I was lucky enough to get the chance to make wedding cakes for a few really wonderful couples over the summer. Both of these brides wanted to go with a more traditional cake with an ivory buttercream frosting and fresh flowers supplied by their florists.

Linda really loves anything Southwestern so she wanted her flowers and cake to reflect those colors- teal, rust and purple. I made the buttercream to look a little like stucco and then placed the cake on a cake plateau for the height.

I also had the pleasure of attending Linda & Jon's wedding. It was a beautiful reception site in a castle- very romantic. We danced the night away and had a blast before it was time to leave and wish the newlyweds luck as they headed off to Switzerland.

I also had the pleasure of working with one of the most easy going brides I have ever met, Jill. Jill, wanting to keep things simple, asked that I made an ivory cake with a brown ribbon around the bottom of each tier.

(I wasn't able to get a picture of the cake with the flowers on it because the florist hadn't arrived at the reception hall by the time I was finished with my set up. They were placed on the cake by the chef. )

This just in: Jill emailed me this morning with pictures of her and her husband cutting their cake and a close up of the beautiful couple on their day. The funny thing is, that I have actually never met either of them so it was great to finally be able to put faces with the emails and cake! I will try to update (with Jill's permission of course) a couple of other pictures from their day so you can see the finished cake with the flowers.

These few cakes are examples of a popular theme- making fondant figures of the celebrated person surrounding them with their favorite things- or like we see in the first cake- their famous sayings!

This double tiered fondant cake was created for a very wise man on his 50th Birthday. His family refers to his sayings as "Paulyologies" and wanted to make sure that was apparent in his cake. I thought they were hysterical and was happy to make them the focus of the cake- this is what I came up with:

The second cake was made for another birthday. For some reason, I can not find the pictures showing the details around the cake. Some of the elements were: a cassette tape, book, logo of the family gas station business, music notes, a red hat and a heart with the word family on it.

This cake was made for a self-proclaimed King of Boston's 30th Birthday party. His fiancee sent me pictures of him and his favorite outfit- including sunglasses and Van sneakers. This was a two tiered fondant cake with a layer of buttercream underneath. The cake was then sprayed with edible shimmer to make the cake shine like the lights in the city. A Cake Fit for a Luau King

This cake was made for a friend on his 30th Birthday. They celebrated his birthday at their annual luau but his wife wanted to make sure there was a king element incorporated into the theme. This is what I came up with. Notice that there are four small 'flames' on the corners of the cake- these actually lit up and flickered to look like tiki flames:

This Groom's cake was requested by a bride for her husband who wants to be a UFC Fighter. She sent me pictures of the fighter he likes best and asked that I make sure he comes complete with a mohawk. Everything is edible except the metal 'cage':

This was a 10-inch double layered cake covered in fondant with a layer of buttercream underneath. The details are hand-made to replicate the US Air Force seal.

This was a unique two tiered cake made for cousins on their Confirmation. One plays baseball and the other, golf. The top tier includes a baseball diamond with a golf flag on the pitcher's mound. The bottom tier represented the golf course.

This cake was a 1/2 sheet cake covered in hand-painted fondant to resemble a hardwood basketball court. The fondant figure was modeled after the 2 year old birthday boy. His name and age completed the jersey.

A Sweet Bridal Shower

This sculpted cake was made for a bridal shower. The bride and groom will be eloping to a tropical location and the host wanted to reflect that in the cake.

All details were edible and the cake came complete with monogram and shells.

First Birthday Princess

birthday with pretty pastels as the color pallet.

The cake was covered in a layer of buttercream and then fondant.

The following two postings show a cake and matching cupcake tower for a baby's naming ceremony. Her initial was placed on each cupcake. Both the cake and cupcakes were finished with a pearl sheen to give it the extra girly shine.

Another Wedding Cake!

This cake was made for a very special bride and her groom. It was ivory fondant with buttercream details. These pictures were taken before the florist added the fresh flowers.

There was a small light on the top tier that illuminated the "S" monogram and the crystals.
